This document helps explain the trip circuit supervision function for the Sepam relay, talks about different types of alarms and also explains implementation and operation of this function.

Trip circuit supervision
  • Between Sepam Series 20/40/80 and the VR circuit breaker trip unit, the trip circuit can pass through wires, terminals and sockets. Sepam relay continuously supervises the circuit to ensure that there is no interruption, since trip circuit continuity is vital for correct circuit breaker operation.

    Trip circuit supervision consists of having a low current flow through the trip circuit. The current also goes into the inputs of Sepam relay, which continuously monitors its presence.

Fault indication
In the event of a break in the circuit, Sepam relay indicates the fault by:
  • the "trip circuit" message
  • a remote indication transmitted by the serial transmission port. If Sepam relay is connected to a monitoring and control system, this data may be used to indicate the fault and its location in the switchgear.
  • the closing of an output contact, which may be used to trigger a local visual or audible alarm. In order for an output contact to be used for this purpose, the function must be assigned to it in the Sepam relay programming matrix.

Implementation and operation.
In order for the trip circuit supervision function to be implemented, Sepam relay and the circuit breaker must be wired according to the wiring diagram in the "Control and monitoring functions" chapter of the Sepam relay technical manual.

This diagram provides the data necessary for the operation of the Sepam relay unit's internal logic, which performs the following two vital functions at the same time:
- trip circuit supervision
- detection of the circuit breaker position
It uses 2 Sepam inputs and two circuit breaker position/status (52a & 52b) contacts which, in normal operation, are in complementary positions.

Sepam relay's internal logic continuously checks that the data on the 2 contacts are, in fact, complementary.
If this is not the case, Sepam relay indicates it, signifying:
- a break in the trip circuit
- or erroneous data concerning the detection of the circuit breaker position.
The consequence may be a failure to trip or incorrect operation of a process that uses the circuit breaker position. It is therefore necessary to check the wiring.
  • So,what does the message - Circuit Trip - mean on a Sepam Relay Series 20/40/80?
The Circuit Trip is related to the CB control logic features. It indicates that the Input I11 or input I12 on Sepam is not receiving a signal. If you are not using a Circuit Breaker control logic the recommendation is not to use this function
