Driving Data Centre Efficiency in Research: How the Wellcome Sanger Institute Leverages EcoStruxure IT Expert to Enhance Performance, Ensure Reliability, and Reduce Energy Consumption in a High-Density Edge Computing Environment
This case study examines how the Wellcome Sanger Institute, a global leader in research, transformed its data centre operations to support rapidly growing data demands. With DNA sequencing technologies generating exponentially increasing volumes of data, the Institute faced challenges related to scalability, energy consumption, system reliability, and infrastructure visibility. To address these, it implemented Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure IT Expert, a cloud-based Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platform that enables real-time monitoring, analytics, and centralized management of critical assets. The solution improved operational efficiency by unifying IT and power infrastructure visibility, reducing downtime risks, and optimizing energy usage. As a result, the Institute expects energy savings of 5–10% within two years and aims to improve its Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). This transformation allows the organization to redirect cost savings into scientific research, enhancing innovation and accelerating genomic discoveries while ensuring a resilient and scalable IT environment.
