How bright is the light – optical units in optical arc flash relays

When it comes to detecting the brightness of natural optical effects like arc flash events, electrical engineers often face the unexpected question of which dimensions and units to use. This paper is intended to bring some light to the darkness of optical units for electro-technical applications, especially for the detection of optical signals from arc flash events in power distribution networks.
