The history of our location in Lahr
The history of the location, which also bears the nickname "House of Motors," dates back to 1941, when Gerhard Berger founded the Berger Lahr company here in the Black Forest. The first products were measuring instruments, control devices and relays. In 1958, the first Berger Lahr stepping motor was built. Over the decades, the company expanded its production area to include the development and manufacture of electronics. In 2000, Schneider Electric took over the company, whereby the company remained independent for the time being. In 2008, Berger Lahr changed its name to Schneider Electric Motion Deutschland GmbH. Since 2013, the Lahr location and the Marktheidenfeld location have formed the Schneider Electric Automation GmbH.
Schneider Electric in Lahr was one of 11 companies in Europe to receive the Smart Factory award in 2018. The Smart Factory is at the heart of Industry 4.0: it provides a production environment that ideally organizes itself without human intervention. The goal is for materials, machines, storage and logistics systems to communicate directly with each other. Since 2018, a driverless transport system has been implemented at the location, which independently transports goods from A to B. Other innovative solutions include our augmented and virtual reality applications, a lean digitalization system for recording productivity in the individual production lines, and a 3D printer.
Our trainees in Lahr start with a lot of responsibility from day 1 - the aim is to train excellent specialists who are willing and able to make decisions on their own responsibility in the interests of the company. Therefore a special feature of the training program is the "trainee bistro": on the one hand, our trainees spoil their colleagues with homemade delicacies and coffee specialties once a week, on the other hand, the young people also run the bistro independently like a company: Controlling, purchasing and marketing are handled by the trainees themselves. The coffee enjoyment comes from a professional Swiss coffee machine, which in turn is driven by Schneider Electric motors.
"The training as a mechatronics technician was a lot of fun, every day was structured differently and brought new challenges - as a result, I am very versatile today. I had the chance to constantly develop and learn. My training gave me the opportunity to work as an Industrial/Manufacturing Engineer at Schneider Electric."
Michael Dorrmann, Manufacturing Engineer
"I decided for an apprenticeship as an industrial mechanic because there is a lot to learn on a daily basis. The versatility and the people you work with make the field of activity interesting and exciting. The combination of planning and manufacturing assemblies excites me."
Janis Trotter, industrial mechanic
"I decided to train as an industrial business management assistant with an additional qualification at Schneider Electric because the profession ideally combines my interest in foreign languages and economic contexts, organizational activities, and contact with people. What I particularly like about the training is that during the three years you are assigned to different departments, such as the HR department, financial accounting or shipping, which means that the everyday life is never getting boring and you can gain a lot of insight into different areas. Schneider Electric is the ideal employer for me, as the group operates internationally and offers me many development opportunities."
Wenke Hauser, Industrial business management assistant with additional qualification
