Schneider Electric joins forces with international and local civil society organizations to support Beirut's reconstruction
- Schneider Electric contributes equipment, supplies and assistance to repair homes, schools and support families affected by the Beirut port explosion
- Eng. Walid Sheta: Schneider Electric Foundation's Tomorrow Rising Fund provides emergency support for disaster areas and long-term reconstruction
Schneider Electric is collaborating with several local non-governmental and civil society organizations, through Schneider Electric Foundation's Lebanon Development Fund to provide support to Lebanon, in addition to motivating various companies and institutions to participate in the reconstruction of the affected areas in Beirut. The entities that Schneider Electric is partnering with include Beitel Baraka and Mughamaratul Mahabba, with the aim of contributing to the repair and restoration of 300 homes that were severely damaged as a result of the explosion.
Through cooperation with the branch of France's IECD-Semeurs d'Avenir, Schneider Electric is contributing to the repair of damages to schools and private and public technical institutes located in the vicinity of the explosion site, such as L'Institut Technique Franco Libanais (ITFL), Al-Marsoubian, Al-Qurtbawi, Al-Dekwaneh, and Bir Hassan. It will provide sustainable and renewable energy sources, technical equipment and wiring for institutes as well as support job creation initiatives.
In addition, Schneider Electric is working on the distribution of 1,000 Mobiya portable solar-powered LED lamps to the families that have become homeless after the Beirut port explosion, in cooperation with SOS Attitude, Arc en Ciel and Electrician Without Borders, and in coordination locally with SEEM.
Eng. Walid Sheta, Regional Cluster President of Egypt, North East Africa and Levant said: "The accident that took place in Beirut is extremely painful, both in terms of human and material losses. The scene, even from the point of view of economic analysts, is so bleak, as nobody can exactly predict how much time Beirut will need to recover from this crisis, especially in the midst of the challenges the world is going through due to COVID-19 breakout. Therefore, it was necessary to coordinate efforts and strengthen solidarity with all, whether private institutions, governments and civil society organizations, in a bid to assist and support the Lebanese people with all of our resources”.
Eng. Sheta added: “Schneider Electric has always been keen to play a pivotal role in supporting societies around the world in achieving the sustainable development goals. In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic crisis, we launched Schneider Electric Foundation's Tomorrow Rising Fund to provide emergency support for disaster areas and to carry out long-term reconstruction. The Fund's priorities are to promptly respond to the needs of low-income people in disaster areas, and to finance educational projects and develop professional skills for members of communities, in addition to bolstering the involvement of Schneider Electric employees and partners in voluntary operations and activities worldwide. Following the explosion that hit Beirut port, it was important for Schneider Electric to participate, through Lebanon Development Fund, in the reconstruction operations in an attempt to provide support to the Lebanese people and to mitigate the impact and repercussions caused by such a tragic accident”.
