Utility-scale renewable energy solutions

Front-of-the-meter renewable energy solutions are large-scale generation and storage systems connected directly to the utility grid. They typically include utility-scale solar farms, wind farms, battery energy storage systems (BESS), substations, protection systems, and digital platforms for monitoring and control.

Renewable energy systems connect to the grid through electrical infrastructure such as transformers, medium-voltage switchgear, protection relays, substations, and grid-control software. These technologies help manage variable generation, maintain grid stability, and meet grid-code and interconnection requirements.

Utility-scale renewable projects require an integrated electrical balance of plant, including low- and medium-voltage equipment, transformers, switchgear, protection and control systems, power monitoring, and SCADA or energy-management software. The exact architecture depends on the generation technology, project size, and grid-connection requirements.

Digital intelligence provides real-time visibility into renewable assets and electrical systems. Monitoring, analytics, automation, and predictive maintenance can help operators identify risks earlier, improve energy yield and availability, reduce unplanned downtime, and manage renewable fleets more efficiently.

Utilities can support grid stability through better forecasting, advanced protection and automation, flexible battery storage, real-time monitoring, and coordinated control of generation and grid assets. Together, these capabilities help manage renewable intermittency, voltage variations, congestion, and changing power flows.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) store excess electricity and release it when the grid or electricity market needs it. BESS can help balance variable solar and wind generation, manage peak demand, provide grid-support services, reduce curtailment, and improve the reliability of renewable energy projects.

Developers can reduce project risk and levelized cost of energy (LCOE) through early electrical-system and grid-code studies, standardized and pre-engineered architectures, reliable equipment, integrated project execution, and digital asset-management tools that improve performance throughout the project lifecycle.

Schneider Electric supports utility-scale solar, wind, and battery-storage projects with consulting and design services, electrical balance-of-plant technologies, medium- and low-voltage equipment, protection and automation, and digital energy-management solutions. This integrated approach supports reliable grid connection and efficient operation across the asset lifecycle.
