Why don't the older NW-RR85-000 repeaters work with the new NW-BP85-000/002 Modbus Plus bridges?

Several years ago, Schneider Electric introduced a new ASIC chip into some Modbus Plus products to improve performance. All products containing the new chip have a sheet packaged with the equipment explaining that if the older RR85 did not contain the nw chip (44-SP00-003) it would not work in the network.
