What is circuit breaker?
A circuit breaker is an electrical device designed to protect electrical circuits from damage caused by overcurrent, short circuit, or other electrical faults. It functions as a switch that automatically interrupts electrical flow when it detects an abnormal condition in the circuit, such as an overload or a short circuit.

When an overcurrent or fault occurs, the circuit breaker quickly "trips," meaning it opens the circuit to stop the flow of electricity. This action helps prevent overheating, fires, and damage to electrical equipment.

Circuit breakers come in various types and sizes to suit different applications, from residential electrical panels to industrial settings.

Types of circuit breaker? There are three types of circuit breaker
  • Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB) for use at household levels. Miniature Circuit Breakers are employed to disrupt the current flow within an electrical circuit when subjected to overvoltage, thereby shielding any linked electrical device from enduring permanent electrical damage.
  • Moulded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCB) for higher current ratings and offer protection against overcurrent and short circuits. The term "molded case" is from the fact that their outer casing is commonly crafted from a molded insulating material."
  • Air Circuit Breakers (ACB) for large switchboards. ACBs serve as protective devices for low voltage circuits. They function by either allowing or interrupting the flow of current within the circuit. Typically, ACBs are employed as the primary circuit breakers in industrial facilities and public structures.

  • Circuit breakers protect electrical cables and machines from overloads, short circuits and insulation failures. Switch disconnectors switch lines on and off, mainly to de-energize and isolate a part of the network before servicing it.

  • MasterPact air circuit breakers (ACB) for the protection of low-voltage lines up to 6300A.
