Medium Voltage Switchgear

The term medium voltage is commonly used for distribution systems with voltages above 1 kV and generally applied up to and including 52 kV. For technical and economic reasons, the service voltage of medium voltage distribution networks rarely exceeds 36 kV. The connection of an electrical installation to a MV utility distribution network is always realised by means of a dedicated MV substation usually termed the main substation. Depending on its size and specific criteria, the installation may include additional or secondary substations. The locations of these substations are carefully selected in order to optimise the budget dedicated to MV and LV power cables.

Primary Gas Insulated Switchgear

What is gas insulated switchgear? Gas insulated switchgear (GIS) is a compact metal encapsulated switchgear comprising high-voltage components including circuit-breakers and disconnectors, that can be safely installed and operated in confined spaces. Gas-insulated switchgear is used in environments where space is limited, with applications from transformer substations to primary power supplies. It is used in mining, petrochemical oil and gas industries, renewable installations, container substations, railways, wind power and critical infrastructures. The choice of switchgear may differ for each application, depending on the importance given to such criteria as compact size, sensitivity to environmental conditions, high-performance availability, criticality of the application, power restoration mode in case of failure, ergonomics of operation, and/or ergonomics of cable testing.
