ION Enterprise 6.0 - Installing ION Enterprise to work with SQL Server 2008 R2

The current ION Enterprise 6.0 installer does not directly support installing ION Enterprise with SQL Server 2008. ION Enterprise will install, but Web Reporter and a number of other components will not function. It is possible to perform a series of manual steps that include using the provided RS2008ConfigurationWizard, and end up with a functional ION Enterprise system. Part of the procedure requires the user to download and install three Microsoft SQL Server components required by ION Enterprise. This is detailed in the attached document.
This procedure should only be attempted by those familiar and comfortable with both SQL Server and ION Enterprise. It is important to read and understand the attached document.

Note that SQL Server 2008 Express IS NOT SUPPORTED. All testing has been done using Windows Server 2008 64 bit. It is assumed that SQL Server 2008 R2 is installed on the target machine prior to installing ION Enterprise, and before running through the procedure described in the attached document.

Also note that ION Enterprise with SQL Server 2008 has not been through a formal development/test cycle, so it is possible that issues may arise that have not yet been encountered. Because of this, this configuration should not be used for critical systems.

Additional Information: The supported platform for this procedure is Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit with SQL Server 2008 R2 64 bit.

December 23, 2010: The document has been updated to include the distributed database server case, and RS2008ConfigurationWizard has been updated to address the issue with ad-hoc database trimming (RESL 203738).

March 30, 2011: The document has been updated to include information about setting the Connection Manager service to manual to avoid possible communications problems after reboot.

November 23, 2011: RS2008ConfigurationWizard has been updated to include a version of the Energy Cost Report with fixes for RS 2008 (RESL206726), and a fix for the ION_SystemLog TRIM job it introduced (RESL204590). It also includes the option to delete & re-create the RS databases if they already exist (TRUE by default). The document has been updated appropriately.
