Power Monitoring Expert - How to Change the "sa" SQL account password when PME is installed with SQL express?

Published date: 24 June 2020

Issue
When Power Monitoring Expert is installed with SQL Server Express, PME installer assigns a random "sa" user account password.

Product Line
Power Monitoring Expert 7.2
Power Monitoring Expert 8.x
Power Monitoring Expert 9.0
Power Monitoring Expert 2020

Environment
SQL Server Express
SQL Server Management Studio

Cause
Power Monitoring Expert installer assigns a unique, random SQL Server "sa" user account password when choosing to install the SQL Server Express version.
This is a new feature to enhance security in Power Monitoring Expert 7.2 and newer versions. Prior to PME 7.2, the installer would use a pre-determined "sa" user account password on installations.

Resolution
*Warning: Irreparable database damage can occur. This procedure should only be performed by users familiar with SQL Server Management Studio.
If the  "sa" SQL user account password needs to be reset, follow the steps below;
1- log in to SSMS using Windows Authentication (Windows user must have Administrator privileges to be able to log in and make changes).
2- Expand Databases and navigate ->Security --> Logins folder.
3- Right-click on "sa", click on properties.
4- Change the password to the desired value.
