Needs a replacement for the Altivar 71 drive

The Altivar 71 drive is a Constant Torque rated drive with many advanced features so in most applications the appropriate replacement for it would be the Altivar 900 Product line

Altivar 71 to Altivar 900 Product Line
ATV930... (IP21) replaces the ATV71 open style
ATV950... (IP55) replaces the ATV71W (IP54) style (not common in the US)
ATV960... (Nema 1, 12K and 3r Drive Systems) replaces the M-Flex or any Enclosed Drive System with an ATV71 drive
ATV980... (Nema 1, 12K and 3r Regenerative Drive) replaces PowerGuard (18-Pulse Drive)

Altivar 71 vs Altivar 900 Product Line
The ATV900 has similar functionalities to the ATV71 but a few differences to be taken in account when replacing.

The ATV71 HP/kW ratings were based on the drive having 150% overcurrent capacity for 60 seconds.
The ATV930 default HP/kW ratings are based on the drive having 120% overcurrent capacity for 60 seconds.
IF your application might need the additional overcurrent capacity (High inertia load, rapid speed changes, Closed Loop Flux Vector control) you will need to select the ATV930 using the Heavy Duty sizing.
This will reduce the HP/kW rating of a specific part number, and increase the overcurrent capacity.
There is a parameter in Menu 5.2 [Motor Parameters] called Dual rating that is used to select Normal Duty or Heavy Duty.
If you are not sure your application is a Normal Duty or Heavy Duty application, it is recommended to select the drive for Heavy Duty.

See the Installation Manual for selection for Normal Duty and Heavy Duty.

Minor Differences

Be aware the sizes are different between each. When replacing an ATV71 drive that is mounted in an enclosure or MCC the dimensions of the product need to be closely reviewed.  In most cases the ATV930 drive will be taller and narrower than the equivalent ATV71. If the ATV71 was installed using a Flange kit to extend the heatsink outside of the enclosure, the customer needs to be aware that the dimensions of the ATV930 Flange kit are unlikely to be the same.
Most ATV930 drives come with the conduit entrance kit. This can be removed when the drive is being installed inside an enclosure. On some of the larger HP ATV630 the Conduit Box must be ordered separately.
Consult the Installation Manual to confirm differences before retro-fitting the drive.

The programming layout or style is different from that of the Altivar 71 drive. However, the functions are similar. The are some functionalities found in one and not the other.
Reference the Programming Manual for further information.

Control Terminals:
The ATV900 has 2 more digital inputs, 1 more analog inputs, safety inputs, 1 more analog output and 1 pulse input on the embedded control terminal card.
Slots are available to add a communication option card and an additional card for I/O or Encoder feedback.

Safety Inputs:
The safety Input on the ATV71 drive is PWR and +24. The ATV900 uses STO inputs (STOA and STOB)
STO stands for Safe Torque Off. (Reference Altivar 900 Safety Manual for more detailed information)

ATV71 uses keypad (VW3A1101) and mounting kit (VW3A1102)
ATV930 uses keypad (VW3A1111) and mounting kit (VW3A1112)
Dimensions of the keypads are not the same. Dimensions of the mounting kits are not the same.
The cables used to connect the drive to the remote mounting kit are the same.

Serial Communication:
The ATV71 included an embedded ModBus/CANopen communication port. Many other communication protocols were available with the addition of an Option card.
The ATV930 includes an Embedded ModBus port (not CANopen) and dual Ethernet communication ports that can support ModBus TCP/IP or Ethernet IP. Other communication protocols are available via option cards.

The ATV71 supported the old command structure of the ATV58 drives (called 8 Series in the programming).
The ATV930 does not support that control method.
