With 15% of U.S. households already adopting solar panels, home batteries, or EVs by end of 2024, coordinated energy management is critical. Without coordination, these systems often work in isolation, leading to inefficiencies and missed opportunities. By leveraging data from all devices, Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) can align solar energy generation with battery charging or optimize EV charging during lower-cost energy periods, ensuring homeowners get the most from their investments.
Half of U.S. internet households actively try to reduce energy consumption, and 46% are willing to share energy data between devices. However, many lack the time, knowledge, or confidence to make impactful changes – 36% of consumers in U.S. internet households say they would like to use less energy but don’t have the knowledge or time to invest in doing so. Currently, 40% of households with smart devices currently use them in a coordinated manner. HEMS platforms, enhanced by AI, bridge this gap by turning data into actionable insights and automation, maximizing efficiency without active management.
Electricity bills are up 14% since 2019, and outages are increasing by 20% annually between 2019 and 2023, making resilience a priority. Consumers are responding with interest in battery backup, solar, and smart panels, giving support during outages, while also contributing to more flexible grid management. But they need assurance that these investments will deliver value. Coordinated energy management helps maximize ROI and resilience.
13% of all internet households participate in demand response programs in the U.S. today, and the rate is growing each year. This number is almost doubled (22%) when it comes to smart thermostat owners. But device-specific demand response programs offer limited flexibility. Whole-home orchestration unlocks broader load management, making demand response and virtual power plants (VPPs) more effective. This enables utilities to offer better incentives and defer costly infrastructure upgrades.
Modern homes with EV chargers, electric water heaters or HVAC systems often require costly 400A service upgrades. HEMS can intelligently stagger high-load devices, allowing homes to operate within existing 200A panels, saving homeowners and builders thousands in upgrade costs and avoiding utility delays, while accommodating energy needs and comfort efficiently.
