What you need to know
Home energy intelligence is the next evolution of smart home energy management. By using AI to continuously optimize electricity consumption, dynamic tariffs, solar generation, and flexible loads such as EV charging and hot water, intelligent home energy systems can deliver lower energy costs, greater efficiency, increased renewable energy utilization, and a more resilient residential energy experience.
Electricity, once just another utility, is rapidly becoming the backbone of residential life. Heating, hot water and mobility are being electrified, distributed renewables are proliferating, and energy pricing is becoming more dynamic.
In this new energy landscape the definition of a “smart home” is expanding beyond comfort and convenience to include as well as the ability to optimize energy consumption, integrate energy resources, and actively participate in a more flexible, resilient and sustainable energy ecosystem.
- 65%

As this home energy complexity deepens, the limits of today’s smart home model are becoming clear. Managing individual devices quickly becomes inefficient. The burden of optimization falls on the user, who must navigate dynamic tariffs, schedules, and constraints that change by the hour.
This is where home energy intelligence becomes essential. It enables a home to continuously learn, predict, and autonomously orchestrate energy resources, devices, and storage to balance cost, carbon impact, comfort, resilience, and electrical capacity according to occupant preferences and grid conditions.
More broadly, it helps make households active participants in the energy system, lowering overall demand, integrating more renewable energy, and improving grid efficiency and stability.
As more homes intelligently shift demand and optimize consumption, grids can better absorb renewable energy, reduce peak demand pressures, and operate more efficiently.
Schneider Electric's Wiser Home with AI feature demonstrates how home energy intelligence can be applied in practice. Acting as a kind of “energy brain”, the system integrates multiple inputs such as electricity prices, weather forecasts, solar production, household routines and user preferences into a single optimization framework.
Its task is straightforward in principle but intricate in execution: to determine when and how energy should be used to minimize cost while preserving comfort.
What distinguishes this approach is not just the breadth of inputs, but the cadence of decision-making. Plans are continuously updated, with hourly revisions and sub-hourly granularity, allowing the system to respond to fluctuations in both supply and demand. In effect, the home is moving from passive consumption to active optimization.
To test the impact of such orchestration, Schneider Electric modelled typical single-family homes in Germany and Denmark, two markets with distinct but complementary energy dynamics. The scenarios focus on two flexible loads, electric vehicle charging and domestic hot water, under dynamic tariffs, with and without rooftop solar, and within realistic consumption patterns and grid limits.
The results reveal meaningful opportunities for cost optimization, particularly when solar generation and dynamic tariffs are combined.

In one of the scenarios assessed, the Wiser Home AI feature helped increase average energy cost savings by 27% in homes with solar panels and dynamic electricity tariffs.
Dynamic tariffs amplify value
by providing more frequent and greater price spreads compared to time‑of‑use tariffs.
Self-consumption maximizes savings
by providing the largest cost advantage over grid electricity, as none of the simulated configurations include negative electricity prices or prices below the feed-in tariff.
Seasonality matters
with higher savings in summer due to increased solar generation and more frequent low-price periods.
These results confirm a central principle: home energy intelligence becomes more valuable as residential energy systems grow in complexity, variability, and volatility.
As households take on a more active role within the energy system, the ability to coordinate consumption intelligently will define the next standard of “smart”. The implication is significant. The future of residential energy does not lie in adding more connected devices, but in ensuring they work together as a coherent whole: this is advancing energy technology.
The smartest homes, in the end, will be those where energy is intelligently optimized in the background and clearly understood.
Schneider Electric’s report “Why smart homes need AI-driven energy intelligence” highlights how system-level energy orchestration can reduce costs while improving resilience to price volatility in residential settings. Uncover how coordinating key loads, such as electric vehicle charging and hot water with tariffs, solar generation, user preferences, and system constraints enables homes to operate more efficiently and cost-effectively, without compromising comfort.
