What you need to know
The future of industrial competitiveness will be designed. As regulatory, environmental, and market pressures intensify, companies must embed sustainability into product design from the outset. Schneider Electric’s Future-Designed approach demonstrates how ecodesign, circularity, digital traceability, and measurable environmental data can improve resilience, reduce total cost of ownership, and accelerate decarbonization. Explore why sustainable design is emerging as a defining source of business value, innovation, and long-term industrial leadership.
Sustainability is no longer a distant ideal or an add-on; it is central to industrial competitiveness. Across industries, the growing urgency to mitigate and adapt to climate change, meet regulatory expectations, and respond to consumer demand is reshaping the way companies design and manufacture their products.
With 80% of a product’s environmental impact depending on design choices, the biggest sustainability decisions are made long before a product reaches the market.
Sustainability is not something you add on, it is something you design in. At Schneider Electric, we are redefining how products are engineered, to deliver measurable environmental and economic benefits.
A product’s environmental performance is increasingly a competitive advantage: tangible proof point for efficiency, quality, and resilience. Industrial companies recognize that achieving long-term performance requires looking at environmental and financial impacts over the full lifecycle of technologies, as well as anticipating today the realities of tomorrow.
Regulatory pressures are tightening, customer expectations are shifting, and corporate net-zero commitments demand proactive engagement throughout the value chain, starting at the design stage.
Products engineered with sustainability in mind reduce energy consumption, lower maintenance costs, and optimize total cost of ownership. Built-in compliance with regulations such as REACH, POP, PEP, PFAS-free, F-gas, and traceability requirements reduces regulatory risk and saves time. For industrial leaders, sustainability isn’t a cost: it’s an investment in resilience and market differentiation.
That resilience extends beyond environmental performance. In increasingly unpredictable markets, products also need to withstand geopolitical and economic disruption. Circularity ensures products retain their value across multiple lifecycles, reducing dependence on raw material extraction and stabilizing supply chains; digital traceability becomes an enabler throughout a product’s life.
As circular economy pioneer Walter R. Stahel put it: “Waste is food. The products of today are the resources of tomorrow, at yesterday’s prices”. Circularity, far from a constraint, is a powerful engine of resilience, cost control, and innovation, decoupling performance from resource consumption.
Our Future-Designed program, integrated in the “Impact 2030” company-wide 5-year transformation cycle, takes ecodesign principles one step further. By 2030, we aim for 100% of major offers in design to demonstrate circular and environmental excellence.
The program is structured around three foundational principles: “Use Better, Use Longer, Use Again.” These principles reflect our vision for sustainable design: selecting better materials, engineering longer-lasting products, and enabling reuse or recycling to reduce waste.
- For instance, modularity and repairability are integrated into product design from the start, allowing customers to extend the lifecycle of their investments while lowering environmental impact.
- Also, responsible and optimized packaging (recycled cardboard, no single-use plastic, lightweighting) reduces waste and improves logistics efficiency.
What makes this credible is that sustainability performance is treated as measurable, not aspirational: governed, traceable, and auditable.
Through our Environmental Data Program, teams can evaluate the full environmental impact of each design decision. Choosing recyclable materials may raise upfront costs but cuts long-term waste-management spend; designing for energy efficiency requires upfront engineering investment but delivers sustained operational savings. This is how sustainability ambition becomes measurable, and delivers real-world value.
The responsibility of industry leaders to collaborate to shape tomorrow’s standards cannot be overstated. At Schneider Electric, as energy technology partner for our customers, we are humbled by the unique responsibility that comes with being recognized as a sustainability leader, three years in a row by TIME Magazine.
Through initiatives like Future-Designed, we are actively driving change, not just responding to it. We are redefining industrial design for a low-carbon, circular economy. By making sustainability performance explicit and measurable, we are setting new benchmarks for what design excellence looks like.
But this journey is not ours alone; it requires collaboration across industries, governments, and communities. Together, we can transform sustainability from a regulatory requirement into a strategic advantage.
By pioneering innovative design practices, we are taking part in building a future where performance and purpose go hand in hand, creating shared value for customers, society, and the planet. This is not about sustainability as a side initiative; it is about reinventing industry itself.
In our Impact Report, discover how ecodesign reduces waste, conserves resources, and creates longer-lasting products with greater circular value, turning sustainability ambitions into measurable benefits across product lifecycles and operations.
