High-traffic Geneva Airport undergoes major electrical upgrade without affecting operations.

Ensuring efficiency, safety and hassle-free travel for millions of passengers each year

Being inside a busy international airport can be stressful for passengers and staff alike. Unforeseen weather events and mechanical difficulties can cause even top-tier airports to suffer delays.

But an electrical power outage can have a disastrous effect, wreaking havoc on flight schedules and impacting cargo operations and emergency management.

Updated power system for an always-on airport

For Geneva Airport in Switzerland, infrastructure improvement was driven by a dedication to ensuring a quality travel experience to the 15 million passengers it serves each year. The expansion included renovating terminals, cargo holds, hangars, and the electrical distribution system.

Geneva Airport turned to Schneider Electric and its innovative EcoStruxure solution to replace the electrical system. That meant complete renovation and installation of a new medium voltage system – transformers, distribution equipment and monitoring software.

In addition, on-site control panels received an upgrade, and the project introduced low voltage cabinets, which enabled airport staff to centralize all their information and create accurate energy reports. All without affecting the airport’s day-to-day operations.

Since implementing the EcoStruxure solution, Geneva Airport has realized benefits such as:
  • Cost-effective modernization
  • Remote monitoring and substation control
  • Space-saving indoor switchgear
  • Improved system reliability
Forecasts indicate passenger traffic will rise to 25 million by 2030. Modernizing its electrical distribution system is one way in which the airport is working to meet its goals and accommodate growth.
