Is there a limitation of number of characters for messages displayed in the alarm banner?

Causes and Fixes

For alarm messages, it's not documented anywhere, but the maximum length of an alarm message is 160 chars. The editor does not stop you as you add them, but it will give an error when you hit "OK" after exceeding this limit.
