Wiring Problem Solving guide for ION Meters

Solving Wiring Problem guide for ION Meters

The intent of the guide is to help Technical Support agents get the complete information from customers
experiencing wiring
problems for hardware support to analyze.
Basic Questions to ask:

NOTE: The following questions have no sequence.

? How does the customer know it is a problem? What are the symptoms of the issue?
? What is the Meter Type? (8600, 7650, 6200 etc.)
? What is the Volts Mode?
? What is the PT/CT ratio (if PTs/CTs exist in the system)?
? What is the system voltage and current?
? Which wiring diagram in the installation guide is being used? If not using the standard wiring diagram from Installation Guide get for the wiring diagram for the meter.
? Is the system referenced to ground? (If yes , how is it referenced to Ground?)
? Is the system balanced?
? What is the load type? (Motor, Variable Frequency Drive, Electric Arch Furnace etc)
? Has the customer used or installed ION meters before?
? What firmware is on the meter?
? Is the customer using a Custom Framework? (If yes , please send it)
? Does the customer have access to the back of the meter?
? Can the customer communicate to the meter?
? Can you (AGENT) connect to the meter?

Solutions:

NOTE: Keep adding more problems with the Action, Solution and Background (if applicable). Please follow the format below.

Problem: Lower kWtot than expected
Action: Put the meter in 4 Wire Wye mode and check the following parameters: kW a, kW b, kW c. Since kWtot= kWa + kWb + kWc, if either of the components is negative it will contribute to a low kWtot.
Solution: If kWa is negative invert the Cts on that phase or if possible invert the connections on the meter side. Use the Meter Wiring Diagnostic tool to troubleshoot.

Problem: Meter reads very high neutral current
Background:For 73XX and 6200 meters, I4 (represents Neutral Current) is built inside the meter and shows the sum of all the currents. Whereas for 7650, 8600, 8800 I4 can be used to monitor Neutral Current, but physically connecting the CT to the I4 terminals.
Action: For 73XX and 6200 get the per phase kW values. For 7650, 8600, 8800 meter ask for the CT ratios for the I4 if I4 is monitoring neutral currents.
Solution:For 73XX and 6200,If kWa is negative invert the Cts on that phase or if possible invert the connections on the meter side. For 7650, 8600, 8800 see if the CT ratios are setup correctly in the meter.

Problem: Negative kW
Background: In all ION meters, negative kW when no energy is flowing from load to the line indicates a wiring and/or polarity issue with the meter.
Action: For all meters, request per phase kW (i.e kW A, kW B, kW C) and per phase Power Factor (i.e. PF A, PF B, PF C) or voltage and current phase angles
Solution: Use the Meter Wiring Diagnostic tool to troubleshoot.

Problem: How to connect a 35S meter work in 4 Wire Wye system.
Background: Form 35 and 35S, 4-Wire Wye, 2 PTs, 3 CTs, (Page 20, ION8600 Installation Guide).
Action:Please see RESL188647
