Why do I get the error message "WebGL is not available" when using the 2D/3D front view in EcoSet Config, and how can I resolve it?
In the EcoSet Config screenshot, the message displayed is:
"WebGL is not available. Make sure that hardware acceleration is enabled in your web browser settings."
This usually means that one of the following issues is present:
1. Hardware acceleration is disabled in Chrome or Edge
Google Chrome
- Open:
- chrome://settings/system
- Verify that "Use graphics acceleration when available" is enabled.
- If you change the setting:
- Click Relaunch (restarting the browser is usually sufficient).
Microsoft Edge
- Open:
- edge://settings/system
- Verify that "Use hardware acceleration when available" is enabled.
- Click Restart.
2. Check whether WebGL is actually working
Open:
Chrome
chrome://gpu
Edge
edge://gpu
Look for:
WebGL: Hardware accelerated
If you see:
WebGL: Software only
or
WebGL: Disabled
then the issue is likely related to the graphics driver or a browser configuration setting.
3. Reset the graphics driver
In many cases, a full reboot is not required.
Windows allows the graphics driver to be reloaded using:
Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B
The screen may briefly go black and a beep may be heard. This reloads the graphics driver.
Afterwards, reopen EcoSet Config and test again.
4. Clear the browser cache
Sometimes the issue can be resolved by:
- Pressing
- Ctrl + Shift + Delete
- Clearing Cached images and files
- Closing and reopening the browser
5. Test in an InPrivate / Incognito window
Some browser extensions can interfere with WebGL.
Try:
- Edge InPrivate mode
- Chrome Incognito mode
If EcoSet Config works there, a browser extension is likely causing the issue.
6. Verify that WebGL is not blocked by IT policies
On corporate laptops, Group Policies may disable WebGL or GPU acceleration.
Test WebGL by opening:
https://get.webgl.org
- If a rotating cube appears, WebGL is functioning correctly.
- If an error message appears, WebGL is not available on the PC.
7. Restart the laptop
Only if the previous steps do not resolve the issue:
- Close all browser windows completely.
- Restart the laptop.
- Open EcoSet Config again.
A full laptop restart is not always necessary, although it can help in some cases.
Recommendation for Schneider Electric customers using EcoSet Config
You could perform these three checks:
- Open
- edge://gpu
- or
- chrome://gpu.
- Confirm that hardware acceleration is enabled.
- Test WebGL functionality at https://get.webgl.org.
These three checks usually identify the cause immediately. In most cases, a browser restart is sufficient; a full laptop restart should only be considered as a last step.
