Beyond Grid Dependency: Technical and Economic Case for New Energy Systems in Green Steel
Decarbonizing steel production is crucial for the global transition to a net-zero economy. This report presents a comprehensive techno-economic analysis of "semi-islanded" energy systems for green steel, examining how strategically combining grid electricity with onsite renewables and hydrogen storage can resolve the tension between environmental goals and market competitiveness. The findings presented herein are particularly significant given the steel industry's large carbon footprint and the report's demonstration of a practical, systems-level pathway toward lower emissions and superior lifecycle economics through optimized hybrid energy configurations.
