Diagnosing Communication Issues with SCADAPack x70 Data Logs

Data logging in the SCADAPack x70 platform captures changes in object values and quality in a manner similar to how event data is produced for DNP3 and IEC 60870‑5‑104 protocols. You can use data logging to log the values of database objects to files when events occur on the object.

To begin using data logging, enable it in the Project Settings dialog by selecting Enable Data Logging. Once activated, data logging options become available within the Object Editor. From there, you can enable logging for specific database objects and define which parameters—such as value changes or quality transitions—should be captured.

EnableDataLog

Detailed information on these parameters can be found in the RemoteConnect Configuration Manual. Navigate to: Configuration Manuals > SCADAPack x70 Configuration > Working with Objects > Configuring Parameter Settings Using the Object Editor > Data Logging Tab.

Once you have identified the objects to be logged, follow these steps to configure data logging:

  1. Navigate to the Object Configuration page.
  2. Select the Objects tab.
  3. Open the Data Logging panel to set your preferred logging parameters.

DataLogging

For detailed procedures—such as creating or deleting data logs, configuring storage, and defining advanced parameters—refer to the RemoteConnect Manual: Configuration Manuals > SCADAPack x70 Configuration > Working with Objects > Configuring Data Logging.

In the example provided, the communication status object of the Modbus scanner was logged, with all available logging parameters enabled. Internal memory was selected as the storage location for the log files. During testing, the logs recorded the communication status transitioning between values 3 and 4, indicating the device switching from Online to Disabled, and back to Online. This level of detail is especially useful when diagnosing intermittent communication issues.

Importantly, the RTU does not require DNP3 or IEC 60870‑5‑104 communication settings to be enabled for data logging to function. However, it should be noted that string‑type objects cannot be logged.
