Aveva System Platform loses communication via OFS during Build Changes in M580 controller.
Issue:
When building changes on our M580 PLC communications are interrupted during the build to our Aveva System Platform HMI.
During the Build Aveva Shows waiting symbols on graphics that flash on and off until the build completes are communications stabilize.
Product Line:
OFS (all versions)
Resolution:
What is seen during online build changes is expected behavior with the M580 when using the embedded data dictionary with OFS. When a build modifies the data dictionary, OFS needs to reload it, which causes OPC client to temporarily lose synchronization. This results in the short communication drop and Bad/Uncertain quality observed on the HMI / SCADA. The effect is more pronounced when the size of the controller application is large and the number of exposed variables is high. This increases the time required for OFS to reload and remap the dictionary during a build.
In the Control Expert Project's Settings, for the PLC Embedded data, the highlighted settings below will help reduce the transition impact, but they do not eliminate it entirely, as a switchover is still required when the new dictionary is applied. Data dictionary is only affected if new variables are created or deleted. If it's takes a long time to perform a build changes, it's possible to max out the preload value.
In OFS, it is also possible to in crease the Max Channels parameter for the affected devices (controllers) to help mitigate this problem.
