7500 and 7600 Communication Port protection against Lightning strikes

Issue

Protection of communication ports against lightning strikes.

Product Line

PowerLogic™ Series 7500 and 7600 meters.

Environment

Industrial and commercial installations where meters are exposed to electrical disturbances, including nearby lightning strikes.

Resolution

The communication ports on the 7500 and 7600 meters (RS-232, RS-485, Ethernet, and MODEM) have been tested for resistance to nearby lightning strikes. These tests confirm compliance with IEC 61000-6-2 standards under a "Class 2 Fast" 1.2/50-microsecond Combination Wave, with a test level of ±1 kV.

Summary

Specification

All communication ports on the 7500 and 7600 meters are protected against nearby lightning strikes. Testing was conducted to meet or exceed IEC 61000-6-2 standards using a "Class 2 Fast" 1.2/50 µs Combination Wave at ±1 kV.

More Information

The surge waveform is capacitively coupled to the signal lines using a metallic capacitive clamp, simulating a conduit that typically surrounds communication cables. This method replicates the effects of a nearby lightning strike impacting the cabling conduit. Compliance with IEC 61000-6-2 is essential for CE marking and ensures robust electromagnetic compatibility in demanding environments.
