Can I use the PM8000/ION7400 meter's small remote display PM89RD96 on ION9000 series meters?
Issue
Not all firmware versions of the PM8000/ION7400 small remote display, PM89RD96, work with the ION9000 series meters.

Cause
The small display was built for the PM8000 and needs newer firmware to support the ION9000.
Resolution

Before downloading any firmware updates, verify the firmware you are downloading is appropriate for the specific model number of your product. If you have any doubts, contact Technical Support for guidance.*
*Warning: Devices should be disconnected from all monitoring software before performing a firmware upgrade*
Note: Firmware release V2.1.0 for the ION9000 uses a new architecture and new internal storage format, when performing the firmware upgrade the meter will complete refractor the internal memory. The upgrade process is made of several steps, and the meter is only fully updated once all steps are completed. Note that this is a ONE WAY upgrade, once on version v2.1.0 the meter cannot be downgraded to V1.4.3.
The compatibility issue is resolved by upgrading the ION9000 to firmware V2.1.0 and the small remote display to firmware v4.0.10.
The upgrade for the ION9000 and the remote display can be completed via ION Setup, if using v3.1.x or newer. See FA212816 for the latest version of ION Setup. FTP is an option, if preferred.
Some RD96 displays may require a two-step firmware upgrade for compatibility with the ION9000 series meter. The RD96 display firmware must be upgraded with the rmdupg_rd96s_001.000.000_patch.bin file before proceeding with the rmdupg_rd96_004.000.000.bin display firmware upgrade file.
The firmware files for the ION9000 and the remote display as well as upgrade instructions can be found here. Please note that In addition to device firmware upgrades using individual files such as UPG, BIN and S19 file formats, ION Setup also supports sequential device upgrades using a packaged ZIP file. This is the preferred method of upgrading your meter to firmware v2.1.0.

Recommended upgrade path:
- Start ION Setup and connect to your meter.
- Open Setup Assistant and navigate to Template > Upgrade.
- Click Upgrade and navigate to the saved the upgrade ZIP file, select it and click Open.
- The Compressed Device Upgrade Package window displays the updates to be installed in the order listed.
- Select the components you want to upgrade. For examples see page 7 of the Upgrade devices to firmware V2.1.0 Technical Note inside the .zip with the firmware files.
- Select the desired settings and readings to be retained.
- Click OK. Click Proceed to start the upgrade process. Do not interrupt the process until all the selected components have been upgraded.
