Can Power Monitoring Expert be installed on a Surface Pro?
Issue
Whenever I try to install PME on a Surface Pro I am getting a "Database Connection Test Unsuccessful"
Resolution
The error is occurring because the Surface Pro itself doesn't meet the requirements for SQL to be installed on. The Surface Pro uses an ARM-based processor and SQL cannot be installed upon it natively.
PME as part of it's install can install SQL Server Express in the background. However it doesn't confirm that the background install has failed. If you attempt to install SQL (Express or Normal) natively outside of PME it will confirm a failed install.
The features of SQL that fail to install on the Surface Pro are:
- Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search
- Machine Learning Services and Language Extensions
- Database Engine Services
- SQL Server Replication
This is why you will get a Database Connection Test Unsuccessful error, because the PME Installer is trying to connect to a failed SQL Server Express install.
There is a possibility of getting around this by installing a VM on the machine and then installing PME in the VM. However this is not recommended as the Surface Pro machine doesn't meet the any of the System specifications for PME - https://product-help.schneider-electric.com/EcoStruxure/Power-Monitoring-Expert-2024/content/2_planning/itrequirements/computerhardware/cpu_ram-basic.htm
