Powerlogic P5 Control Object 1 Status Remains in Intermediate State over IEC 61850 MMS

Issue

PowerLogic P5 relays with firmware v02.503.101 and similar configuration may fail to update the position status of Switch Controller / Control Object 1 over IEC 61850 MMS.

When monitoring the relay using IEDScout, Control Object 1 remains in the Intermediate state, even when the physical object changes position. Other configured objects, such as Control Objects 2 and 3, update correctly over IEC 61850 MMS.

Environment

  • PowerLogic P5
  • Firmware / Software version v02.503.101
  • IEC 61850 MMS communication
  • eSetup Easergy Pro
  • IEDScout
  • CID configuration files

Cause

The issue is related to a change in the Event enabling settings introduced with firmware/software version v02.503.101.

Compared with software version v02.502, some events for Control Object 1 are no longer enabled by default in version 503. In particular, the following position-related events may be unchecked:

  • Open event
  • Closed event
  • Undefined11 event
  • Undefined00 event

When these events are disabled, the Control Object 1 position information is not updated correctly over IEC 61850 MMS, which can result in IEDScout continuously displaying the object in the Intermediate state.

Resolution

Using eSetup Easergy Pro, verify and enable the required events for Control Object 1:

  1. Connect to the P5 relay with eSetup Easergy Pro.
  2. Navigate to LOGS > Event enabling - objects.
  3. Locate Control object 1.
  4. Verify that the following events are checked/enabled:
    • Open event
    • Closed event
    • Undefined11 event
    • Undefined00 event
  5. Apply/write the modified configuration to the relay as required.
  6. Verify the Control Object 1 position again through IEC 61850 MMS using IEDScout.

The screenshots show that these events are enabled in software version 502, while some are unchecked in version 503. Enabling the corresponding Control Object 1 events restores the expected position-status updates.
