STBNIP2311 Advantys Ethernet Dual Port NIM Firmware Upgrade - Exec v.3.01

Issue
The purpose of this resolution is to inform STBNIP2311 users that the Exec and Web pages have been upgraded to the following:

    • Exec v.3.01
    • Kernel v.2.04 (was not changed)
    • Web v.2.01.00

Product Line
Advantys STB
STBNIP2311

Environment
Advantys Configuration Software 4.7.0.1

Resolution
STBNIP2311 Exec version 3.01 provides improved recovery times for ring topologies by implementing RSTP (Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol). This functionality offers fast recovery of the ring topology but requires the implementation of RSTP in all nodes. Maintaining a ring composed of RSTP-enabled devices offers faster recovery time and broadcast storm protection.

Advantys Configuration Database Update
To configure RSTP in the STBNIP2311 using Advantys Configuration Software, it is necessary to update the ACS catalogue 'database' from v4.7.0.1 to v4.7.0.4. (This update can be found on Planet under Advantys STB - Software Updates). The Advantys Configuration software component updated to v4.7.0.4 is the STBNIM01ME.dll. This is not required when using Advantys Configuration software version 5.0.

  • Implementation of RSTP for Ring Topologies
In an I/O ring topology, data flows in an optimal orientation to service all nodes of the ring. In the case that any one segment of the ring becomes disabled or disconnected, the members of the ring automatically re-route traffic to insure communication flow.

Un-managed or un-monitored Ethernet rings operate at risk of being overwhelmed by broadcast storms. The Ethernet protocol implemented in this offer, called RSTP, prevents the generation of broadcast storms by managing the ports of the devices on the ring.

Configuration of RSTP in Advantys Configuration software:

  • RSTP Configuration and Monitoring via web pages
RSTP functionality can also be Enabled or Disabled through the NIMs web page, RSTP Configuration.
The status of the RSTP functionality and the state of the ports can be monitored through the NIMs Diagnostic web page, RSTP Bridge Statistics.

Upgrading the Exec
The new Exec., Kernel, and web versions are field upgradable for the STBNIP2311 Ethernet NIM hardware. This Exec is exclusively for the STBNIP2311 and cannot be used in STBNIP2212's Ethernet NIMs.
Exec file, nip2311_upgrade_[fw]_v3.01_[web]_v2.01.00.exe, will launch the loader utility program and prompt the user to enter the IP address of the Ethernet NIM. The Exec, Kernel, and web files will load sequentially and then reboot the NIM when it finishes loading.

The self-extracting executable file allows the user to enter up to 5 different IP addresses for updating. To upgrade more than 1 at a time, simply enter additional IP addresses separated by a space when prompted to during the upgrade.
