What are the differences between ASCO 917 and ASCO 918?

The ASCO 917 is an obsolete product and was superseded by the ASCO 918. Aside from the obvious difference in color, the 918 offers an improved performance.

Due to the high inrush associated with HID and halide lighting, closing the contacts requires more force to prevent the contacts from ā€œbouncingā€. Contactor ā€œBounceā€ results when several coil cycles are required to achieve full closure at peak inrush and the subsequent arcing causes the contacts to wear out more quickly. The 918 includes a driver circuit board that ensures that the coil voltage is applied at the peak of the cycle, preventing the contact ā€œbounceā€.

Due to this design improvement, the 918 nameplate shows a change in Ballast rating from 20A to 30A.
