The main purpose of earthing is to reduce the risk of serious electric shock from current leaking into uninsulated metal parts of an equipment such as appliance, power tool, or other electrical devices where the continuity of supply is must and for critical loads such as telecommunication, hospitals etc.
In a properly earthed system, such leakage or fault current is carried away to the ground harmlessly while tripping the protective devices.
