Further, the result of any overload is the increased temperature of the transformer's oil and windings, which severely impacts its longevity. In order to safeguard of a transformer against overloads, several industrial sectors deploy a special kind of electric relay called thermal overload relay. This kind of protection mirrors the temperature of the transformer's convolutions, and the resemblance is based on the measure of the current and the transformer's constant thermal time. Some relays can eliminate the effect of harmonics of the current resulting from non-linear loads such as rectifiers, computers, variable speed drives, etc. This kind of relay can also evaluate the outstanding time before the release of the tripping order and the time-lapse before re-energizing the transformer.

What is Distance Protection Relay?

A distance protection relay is used to trip a circuit breaker during overloads or faults, and in low-rating circuits, it can trip on its own. Common in high-voltage AC transmission and distribution lines, it has replaced overcurrent protection as it acts faster, requires no readjustment, supports higher loading, and is less impacted by generation levels.
