Challenge
Patna is home to over 2 million people. Keeping up with the energy demands of a city developing at break-neck speed was proving to be a challenge for South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL). Additionally, the absence of a centralized information system hindered their ability to access vital data on power loss and faults.
This lack of data accessibility posed difficulties in system recovery and planning for future requirements.
Solution
After carefully evaluating the power distribution company’s challenges, Schneider Electric implemented the IoT-enabled EcoStruxure Grid Solution to enhance grid connectivity and reliability. The project involved modernizing the state’s electric distribution network by deploying software and products across the three layers of infrastructure: Apps and Analytics, Edge Control and Connected Products.
- The first layer focused on establishing the Command-and-Control Center and Disaster Recovery Center within the Apps/Intelligence and Services
- The second layer involved an integrated Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) and Geographical Mapping of Distribution Network and Assets on GIS within the Edge Control segment.
- Finally, the third layer involved the implementation of 51 Substations of 33/11 kV, 250+ feeders, 305 Ring Main Units, and 550 Fault Passage Indicators on overhead lines to improve distribution power reliability.
Result
For residents, this collaboration resulted in 24/7 availability of power in the city of Patna with elimination of voltage fluctuations. It also enabled a centrally-integrated, efficient billing system for consumers.
For DISCOMs, the solutions enhanced revenue protection, reduced outages, enabled quick fault-detection, reduced energy losses from ENS and improved power reliability by 90%.
