Data Center Expert | Configuring Hardware Resources (RAM, CPU, Hard Disks, & Network Adapters)
Issue:
Process for adding additional hardware resources to the EcoStruxure IT Data Center Expert Virtual Appliance.

Product Line:
StruxureWare Data Center Expert (DCE)
EcoStruxure IT Data Center Expert (DCE)
- Virtual Appliance (AP94VMACT)

Environment:
EcoStruxure IT Data Center Expert Virtual Appliance (all versions)

Cause:
The Data Center Expert OVA is deployed with limited resources, which may need to be increased storage space or improve performance.

Resolution:

Increase Hard Disk Space (Storage)
Increase RAM (Memory) or CPU (Processors)
Adding Private Network (Second Network Adapter)

Increasing Hard Disk Space

To increase storage for the virtual machine (VM), you must create additional hard disks. You cannot change the size of an existing hard disk, or remove a hard disk once it has been created. An error will occur on the primary interface, and the EcoStruxure IT Data Center Expert virtual appliance will not start.

1) Gracefully shut down the virtual appliance: DCE Desktop Client > File menu > Shutdown Server.

2) In your virtual server settings, located within vSphere (VMware), select the option to add a hard disk.
NOTE: Do not increase the size of the default *18GB drive as the server will not see the newly added and it may cause storage issues. This is the same for any other previously allocated drives. Once the DCE VM boots with a new drive, it allocates the space for the database on that drive and will not re-allocate space if the drive size is increased. ALWAYS add a new drive when increasing drive space for the DCE VM.

*As of version 7.9.3, the default disk size in the OVA is now 40GB.*

3) Choose the hard disk size.
NOTE: For physical appliance equivalents, see equivalent configurations.

4) Choose thin or thick provisioning.

5) Power on the virtual appliance.

NOTE: Changes in the disk space will take effect once the EcoStruxure IT Data Center Expert virtual appliance has restarted. Do not shut down the virtual appliance while the disk reconfiguration process is running.

TIP: To verify that the Data Center Expert Virtual Appliance sees the additional space, navigate to the following: Desktop Client > System Menu > Server Administration Settings > Storage Settings.  The local repository option should show a combined amount of all of the disks added to the virtual appliance.

NOTE: To store large amounts of surveillance data, using a remote repository is recommended.

Increasing RAM (Memory) or CPU (Processors)

1) Gracefully shut down the virtual appliance: DCE Desktop Client > File menu > Shutdown Appliance.

2) In your virtual server settings, located within vSphere (VMware), provide the new value for the amount of Memory/CPUs desired.

3) Save the Settings and Power on the virtual appliance.

NOTE: Deployment of Data Center Expert 7.9.x VM only allows up to 8 CPU cores.

Adding Private Network (Second Network Adapter)

1) Gracefully shut down the virtual appliance: DCE Desktop Client > File menu > Shutdown Appliance.

2) In your virtual server settings, located within vSphere (VMware), select the option to Add Network Adapter.

3) Specify the type and the network connection.  Ensure this connection is mapped correctly, particularly when the DHCP server will be enabled on the private network interface.

4) Save the Settings and Power on the virtual appliance.

5) Log into the vSphere console for the DCE virtual appliance using the following credentials (default, but can be changed):
Username: apcsetup
Password: apcsetup

6) Within five (5) seconds, press "m" to modify the settings.

7) Accept the settings that were previously configured, or modify the settings if needed.

8) Press "y" to accept the Enable private network interface option.

9) Specify whether you want to enable the DHCP server on the private network interface.
