Understanding microSD Card Requirements on SCADAPack Edge Devices
Summary
SCADAPack Edge devices can operate with Edge firmware without requiring a microSD card. However, a microSD card is required for deploying, storing, and running Edge applications, including Python, C++, Docker-based, and other custom-developed applications.
microSD Cards No Longer Included
microSD cards are no longer supplied with SCADAPack Edge devices. While the hardware continues to include a dedicated microSD card slot, users must provide their own compatible microSD card when application hosting or execution is required.
Is a microSD Card Required for Edge Firmware Installation?
No. A microSD card is not required to install or operate the Edge firmware.
The following functions are available without a microSD card:
- Installing or upgrading Edge firmware
- Basic Edge Platform operation
- Configuring and using Ethernet Ports 3 and 4
- Using Edge USB interfaces
- Accessing standard Edge Platform services
As a result, Edge firmware can be installed and run successfully even when no microSD card is present.
When Is a microSD Card Required?
A microSD card becomes necessary when deploying or executing Edge applications. This includes:
- Python applications
- C++ applications
- Docker container applications
- Custom Edge applications
- SDK-generated application bundles
Why Is the microSD Card Required?
The Edge Platform uses the microSD card to host critical application-related components, including:
- Edge Application Overlay: Stores the deployed application bundle and launch scripts.
- User Read/Write Data: Provides persistent storage for application data.
- Docker Cache Data: Stores operational and runtime data for containerized applications.
These components make up the Edge Platform's read-write overlay file system and are essential for application execution.
