EtherNet/IP Communication on PowerLogic P5 Protection Relays

Issue:

How to configure and use EtherNet/IP protocol for PowerLogic P5 relays, including supported features, limitations, and integration requirements.

Product:

PowerLogic P5 Protection Relay

Environment:

Industrial Ethernet networks
SCADA/DCS systems using CIP-based communication
Managed switches with VLAN/PRP/RSTP/HSR redundancy
Configuration tools: eSetup Easergy Pro, Web HMI

Cause:

EtherNet/IP is a CIP-based protocol enabling real-time data exchange between devices. Misconfiguration of assemblies, IP settings, or EDS files can lead to communication failures, incorrect data mapping, or loss of control functionality.

Resolution:

-Protocol Role: Adapter-only; cannot initiate connections.

-Messaging Types:

  • UCMM (peer-to-peer, TCP)
  • Class 3 (cyclic explicit, max 6 TCP connections)
  • Class 1 (cyclic I/O, 1 UDP connection, RPI 100 ms–5 s)

-Objects Supported: Identity, Message Router, Assembly, Connection Manager, TCP/IP Interface, Ethernet Link, plus application objects (Control Supervisor, Overload, Digital, Status, Protection, Measurement, Harmonic, Command).

-Assemblies:

  • Static: Producing (2), Consuming (50)
  • Dynamic: Producing (100), Consuming (150), configurable up to 128 bytes
  • Changes require reboot and EDS file regeneration

-EDS File: Must be generated via eSetup Easergy Pro; required for client configuration; cannot be extracted over EtherNet/IP.

-Data Model: Extensive mapping of relay data (protection status, measurements, harmonics, counters, commands) to CIP object addresses.

-Security: No native encryption; use VLANs, firewalls, IP filtering, and secure tunnels for external networks.

-Limitations:

  • Only one Class 1 I/O connection at a time
  • Max 8 simultaneous connections
  • Multicast IP default: 239.0.0.1

-Integration: Supports real-time monitoring, control, and configuration for SCADA/PLC systems.
