Issue:
This question is often asked by customers, especially by their procuring departments. "Why are the internal individual batteries not replaced instead of replacing the complete SYBT5 battery module?".
Product Line:
Symmetra LX
Resolution:
The SYBT5 / SYBT5FR is unique in regard to how it communicates with the system of a Symmetra LX. There is a circuit board inside the module that is factory calibrated to the individual batteries. This provides the sophisticated battery management that the LX offers. The individual batteries in the SYBT5 / SYBT5FR are also produced by selected providers that adhere to the standards that APC by Schneider Electric gives them in terms of ratings and such.
Installing the internal batteries into an SYBT5 / SYBT5FR would require someone to reprogram the module with a proprietary calibration code from APC by Schneider Electric assembly areas. No one outside the manufacturing of APC by Schneider Electric will have the correct proprietary code or the means to program or reproduce it in its entirety. This is only done by the facilities of APC by Schneider Electric where the battery modules are officially manufactured. This is done to ensure that all individual modules have been properly programmed and it will communicate all that is needed to ascertain that the intelligence modules read the batteries correctly. The SYBT5 / SYBT5FR will then go to quality assurance tests before it is sold out to the market to assure full functionality. Failure to put in the right code and/or programming may cause adverse effects to the overall functionality of the Symmetra LX.
Because such reconditioned/refurbished battery modules may not communicate properly with the Symmetra LX System, as would be the case after such a replacement, various issues that could impair system operation and fault alarms may appear:
- Battery charging issues may occur, which can lead to critical system failures
- Intelligence modules and/or Symmetra (XR) Extended Run Frame communication cards may not interpret the battery's overall status correctly and may fail to support the attached load
- APC by Schneider Electric PowerChute Shutdown Software may not properly work, and an improper shutdown to load drop page may be experienced
- Added safety features like for the SYBT5FR will not present if the batteries were replaced or programmed incorrectly
As unauthorized modification of a component assembly voids the system UL/IEC/CE rating, the Symmetra LX unit may not be recertified and/or revitalized of its contract. APC by Schneider Electric will not provide support for such refurbished batteries or any faults that occur as a result of batteries that have been refurbished in this way. Also, if the internal Battery Cells were replaced with single APC VRLA's but, done outside of APC by Schneider Electric official assemblies / factories or made without prior authorization from the company, APC by Schneider Electric, will not honor this, and will not replace the SYBT5 / SYBT5FR nor be responsible for faults and/or issues the Symmetra LX and any of its load may experience due to the use of improper and unauthorized SYBT5 / SYBT5FR assemblies.
