Issue
Users need the correct RS-232 DB9 pinout for the SAGE 3030X serial ports to ensure proper wiring and communication with IEDs and other devices.
Product
SAGE RTU 3030 / 3030M
Environment
Utility substations using SAGE 3030X for SCADA and automation, connecting to Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) or Master Terminal Units (MTUs) via RS-232 serial ports.
Cause
Incorrect pin assignments during installation can lead to communication failures, loss of data, or inability to synchronize timing signals.
Resolution
The SAGE 3030X rear panel includes 16 RS-232 serial ports (DB9 connectors) plus one PPP port. The pinout for these ports is as follows:
| Signal | Pin # | Description | Type |
| DCD | 1 | Data Carrier Detect* | Input |
| PWR | 1 | +5V for aux devices* | Output |
| RX# | 2 | Receive Data | Input |
| TX# | 3 | Transmit Data | Output |
| IRIGB | 4 | Timing Signal | Output |
| DGND | 5 | Ground | N/A |
| IRIG_GND | 6 | IRIG Ground | N/A |
| RTS | 7 | Request To Send | Output |
| CTS | 8 | Clear To Send | Input |
| RI | 9 | Ring Indicator | N/A |
Notes:
- Pin 1 can be configured for either DCD or +5V power output (default is DCD).
- IRIG-B timing signal is available on Pin 4, with ground on Pin 6.
- RS-232 power (5VDC) is selectable on all 16 ports, max 5W total.
- Use proper shielded cables for IRIG-B and serial connections.
For front panel Console and PPP ports, the pinout differs slightly (includes DTR and DSR signals).
