What is SF6 gas?

SF6 is an artificial gas that has been widely used for decades in high and medium voltage electrical equipment, such as switchgear, as an insulating and arc quenching agent. The gas owes its popularity to its insulating and circuit-breaking properties, thermal capacity and stability. It is also inert, non-flammable and completely non-toxic in its pure form. SF6's highly insulating property allows it to significantly reduce the size of switchgear, crucial for many tight spaces.
