Smart UPS Modular Ultra Installation and startup best practices
Issue:
Smart‑UPS Modular Ultra (Rafiki) reports one or more of the following conditions during installation, servicing, or startup:
- “Invalid configuration – not enough operational Power Modules installed”
- Output power OFF due to internal error
- RIM not ready
- Unknown UPS internal error (3C1B)
- IM not operating properly (3966)
- Event 1511 reported in the UPS log

Resolution:
These alarms are commonly the result of module firmware synchronization and insufficient normalization time, not hardware failure.
When a Power Module firmware version does not match the UPS system firmware, the UPS will automatically initiate a firmware update (Event code 1511). During this process:
- The affected Power Module will not support load
- The update can take up to 15 minutes
- The event may take several minutes to appear in the UPS log
If modules are reseated, removed, or the system is restarted before normalization completes, alarms may repeat and persist.
Required Actions:

Ensure all modules are fully installed and secured
- Install all PMs, BMs, and IMs before powering on
- Hand‑tighten thumbscrews only (do not overtighten)

Power on the system once and allow normalization
- Do not restart the UPS
- Do not reseat or remove modules
- Normalization may take up to 15 minutes, especially when firmware updates occur

Monitor but do not intervene during firmware updates
- Event 1511 indicates active Power Module firmware synchronization
- This behavior is expected and required for proper operation

If alarms persist after full normalization
- Contact CCC before performing any troubleshooting actions
- Avoid repeated module engagement/disengagement without CCC guidance
Important:
- Removing or reseating modules during firmware updates resets normalization timing and can lead to repeated alarms.
- “RIM not ready” alarms may persist longer if the IM is reset before completing its boot sequence.
- Repeated thumbscrew engagement/disengagement can extend initialization time and contribute to configuration errors.
- Most startup and firmware‑related alarms clear automatically when the system is allowed to stabilize.
