What is a safety instrumented system (SIS)? 

It is an operating system designed to automatically prevent or mitigate events in industrial processes that may be hazardous. Usually, industries use SISs in high-risk situations and tasks. That is why quite often we can see chemical processing, oil and gas, power generation, or chemical businesses make use of such a safety instrumented function. To provide a safe state and deliver reliability, these systems usually consist of three components. There are sensors that detect dangerous conditions and events in the process, logic solvers for interpreting the data sensors gather, and actuators that act to prevent or mitigate hazardous conditions.
