การสตาร์ทมอเตอร์แบบสตาร์-เดลต้า มีหลักการทำงาน คือ ขณะที่ทำการสตาร์ทมอเตอร์จะทำการต่อแบบสตาร์ ซึ่งช่วยลดกระแสขณะสตาร์ทได้ และเมื่อมอเตอร์เริ่มหมุนไปได้ระยะหนึ่งก็จะทำการต่อแบบเดลต้า
ซึ่งมอเตอร์จะมีกระแสขณะสตาร์ทประมาณ 1-2 เท่าของกระแสพิกัดซึ่งน้อยกว่า Direct On Line
