The backfeed relay is used to prevent the UPS output power, when working on battery, from returning to the main power network.

It's for safety reasons for people, so they don't have an electric shock.

Like any relay, it may fail, the UPS will enter fault mode, turn off the UPS output, and turn off the load to avoid backfeed to the mains.
