Character and length limitations of the username and password fields on a Network Management Card

Environment
  • All serial numbers
  • All firmware versions as noted

Cause

Majority of firmware versions and devices have certain limitations on length or characters that can be used for usernames, passwords, and other user input fields. This document will outline them.

Resolution
These restrictions apply to the administrator, device-user and the read-only user of the Network Management Card. Any further characters beyond the above the max limits are ignored.
These restrictions apply to usernames and passwords for Network Management Card 1 devices (v2.X.X):
  • The username is case-sensitive and can contain a maximum of 10 ASCII characters.
  • The password is case-sensitive and can contain a maximum of 10 ASCII characters.
  • They cannot start with a space.

These restrictions apply to usernames and passwords for Network Management Card 1 devices (v3.X.X, 5.0.X):
  • The username is case-sensitive and can contain a maximum of 10 ASCII characters.
  • The password is case-sensitive and can contain a maximum of 32 ASCII characters.
  • They cannot start with a space.

These restrictions apply to usernames and passwords for Network Management Card 2 devices (v5.1.X and later):
  • The username is case-sensitive and contain a maximum of 64 bytes.
  • The password is case-sensitive and can contain a maximum of 64 bytes.
  • They cannot start with a space.

In addition to restrictions on username and password restrictions, the following is also true in regards to Network Management Card 2 devices:

AOS versions v5.0.0-5.0.3
  • No space or - in the NMC password field
  • All characters allowed in any other user input field

AOS versions v5.1.0, 5.1.1
  • No space or - in the NMC password field
  • No other special characters allowed (global restriction - all user input fields including username and password)

AOS versions >v5.1.1
  • No space or - in the NMC password field. Space cannot be the last character in the password field.
  • Global restriction on < > "" characters (except for username and password field)
  • ! " # $ % & ' ( ) * + , - . / : ; < = > ? @ [ \ ] ^ _ ` { | } ~ allowed in any other user input field
  • User creation via the Command Line Interface does not accept # character for username and password but this can be used when adding user via web or config.ini

AOS versions v6.0-6.2
  • No space or - in the NMC password field.
  • ! " # $ % & ' ( ) * + , . / : ; < = > ? @ [ \ ] ^ _ ` { | } ~ allowed in any other user input fields
  • Global restriction on < > "" characters (except for username and password field)
AOS versions v6.4
  • No - in the NMC password field
  • ! " # $ % & ' ( ) * + , . / : ; < = > ? @ [ \ ] ^ _ ` { | } ~ allowed in any other user input fields
  • Global restriction on < > "" characters (except for username and password field)

Please Note: With v6.0.6 and higher's capability, the super user or an administrator can configure the Strong Password feature as a requirement and the passwords can be restricted in a matter of speaking. If enabled, one uppercase character, one lowercase character, one number, and one symbol is required. Also, limitations of the Command Line Interface (CLI) language itself may prevent certain characters from being used.

In order to verify your AOS version via the Command Line Interface on the NMC, login and check the top right hand corner of the console. Within the web interface on v3.X.X-5.X.X, navigate to the Administration Tab->General->About screen. With NMC2 v6.0.6 or higher, you'll see an About->Network menu on the web.
