How to Enter Safe Mode on SAGE RTU
Issue:
Need to boot the SAGE RTU into Safe Mode for troubleshooting or recovery after configuration errors or system crashes.
Product:
SAGE Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) All models
Environment:
- SAGE RTU running secure firmware (C3414-500-S02YZ or later)
- Config@WEB GUI interface accessible via web browser
- Physical access to RTU console or web interface
- RTU connected via Ethernet or console port
Cause:
Safe Mode is required when the RTU cannot boot normally due to configuration issues, corrupted files, or repeated crashes. This mode allows the RTU to start without running applications, enabling corrective actions without executing the last configuration.
Resolution:
- Access the Config@WEB GUI:
- Open Internet Explorer or Chrome and enter the RTU’s IP address.
- Log in with credentials that have configuration privileges.
- Navigate to Reset Options:
- From the main menu, click Reset.
- A dialog box will appear with reset options.
- Enable Safe Mode:
- Check the box labeled Safe Mode.
- Click Yes to confirm.
- Wait for Reboot:
- The RTU will restart in Safe Mode.
- This process takes approximately 60 seconds.
- Verify Safe Mode:
- In Safe Mode, the RTU runs VxWorks without applications.
- The CPU “Run” LED will remain steady ON (not blinking).
- Use the console or GUI to correct configuration issues.
- Return to Normal Operation:
- After fixing the configuration, uncheck Safe Mode and perform a normal reset.
