No you can not, Suggest you use the SDSA3650 is applicable to 208Y/120Vac 3PH/4W, 480Y/277Vac 3PH/4W, 600Y/347Vac 3PH/4W, 240/120Vac 3PH/4W (High Leg), 240Vac 3PH/3W (Grounded B Phase) and 480Vac 3PH/3W (Grounded B Phase) voltage systems. Systems must be solidly grounded. Do not use the SDSA3650 on ungrounded systems.

Installing, operating and maintenance

Two SDSA1175 surge protection devices can be installed to provide suppression for 208Y/120 Vac three-phase four-wire services. See wiring diagram below on how it would be wired up for 208Y/120:

To optimize the performance of the SDSA1175/SDSA1175T surge protective device (SPD), conductors should be twisted and kept as short as possible by trimming excess wire. Avoid looping, coiling, or introducing sharp bends in the conductors, as these can increase impedance and reduce surge suppression effectiveness. The SPD should be connected to the circuit breaker(s) located in closest proximity to minimize lead length. Extended conductor lengths can significantly degrade the device’s clamping response and overall performance.

Connect the two SDSA1175 black wires to a maximum 20 A 120/240 V two-pole circuit breaker, or two adjacent maximum 20 A 120 V single-pole circuit breakers within the panel. Connect the white wire to the neutral bar. For circuit breakers having terminals identified for multiple conductors, the SDSA1175 can be connected along side multiple loads, however, the tripping of this circuit breaker will cause the entire load center to lose surge protection. To enhance the performance of the SDSA1175, twist, bind and keep the conductor length as short as possible with no sharp bends. Do not loop or coil the wires.

The surge protective device (SPD) leads consist of 600V 105°C 14 AWG wires, each approximately 2 feet in length.

No. To ensure optimal performance, the SDSA1175 should be installed as close as possible to the protected circuit to minimize lead length. Each additional foot of conductor can introduce approximately 160 V of let-through voltage (based on a 6 kV / 3 kA, 8/20 µs surge). The device’s Voltage Protection Rating (VPR), as tested per UL 1449 standards, is measured six inches from the enclosure. Square D does not recommend extending the leads, as doing so may alter the clamping voltage from published specifications.

The SDSA1175 is meant for use in a 120/240V single-phase 3-wire/2-wire setup. Using this device on a higher voltage system will cause damage to the SPD. For a 480V system, the suitable SDSA series SPD to use is the SDSA4040 (for 480Y/277) or SDSA4040D (for 480V Delta). For a 240V system, the appropriate SDSA series SPD to use is the SDSA2040 (for a 208Y/120) or SDSA2040D (for a 240 Delta).

Indeed, the SDSA surge protectors are suitable for use on systems operating at 50 or 60 Hertz.

Ordering the wrong SPD requires return/exchange, if possible. One SPD cannot substitute for the other. It is crucial to order the correct SPD with the appropriate voltage code.

SDSA1175 and SDSA1175T units lack a green wire for connection to the electrical system ground. The neutral wire, usually a larger #AWG wire, provides a lower impedance path back to the N-G Bond. SDSA1175 and SDSA1175T have a white neutral wire, used for surge current dissipation back to the electrical system service entrance.
