Single-pole circuit breakers are available in various ampere ratings that occupy one space in the load center. A typical residential service contains electrical branch circuits supplying wall receptacles, lighting fixtures, and dishwashers.

Double-pole circuit breakers are also available in various ampere ratings for appliances that require larger amounts of power, like clothes dryers and air conditioners. They use separate 30A, 40A, or 50A 240 Vac branch circuits.

Tandem circuit breakers are low amperage and provide two isolated single-pole circuits, utilizing only one single-pole space in the load center.
