Per the user manual, it is highly recommended that the Advantys STB island be mounted in a vertical
position. If the island must be mounted in a horizontal position, sufficient cooling needs to be provided
(i.e., ducted fan forced air, etc.). The cooling air must flow through the modules and not around them.
The STB system is designed to be cooled using natural air convection (i.e. not forced air convection).
The convection air velocity is dependent upon the difference between the surface temperature and
flowing air temperature. The velocity is also affected by the geometry and any obstruction in the flow
path (i.e. housing grills, narrow spacing between boards, large components, etc). For the temperature
differentials and vertical mounting geometry, the convection air flow velocity is typically in the 1.5 to 3
inch per second range (i.e. 0.04 to 0.08 meter per second). Tests have shown that the natural convection
airflow velocity for the Advantys STB island, is on the lower end of this range
Having fans just blowing air at the bottom of an STB island will not achieve the desired results because
most of the air flow will go over and around the STB modules. To prevent this from occurring , some type
of ducting needs to be provided to direct the air flow from the fans into the openings on the bottom
of an STB island. The duct does not need not be elaborate or totally sealed. It needs to be sufficient
enough to provide air flow through the STB modules.
