Does There Exist a USB to RS-232 Converter for SFT2841 Software and Sepam Front Port Connection
Issue
User needs to know if a USB to RS-232 converter can be used with SFT2841 software and the Sepam mini-DIN front port connection.
Product
SFT2841 Software
Sepam Protection Relays
Environment
PC communication setup with Sepam relays via mini-DIN front port
Cause
Modern computers often lack RS-232 serial ports, requiring the use of USB to RS-232 converters. However, compatibility issues may arise depending on the converter drivers and COM port configuration used by SFT2841.
Resolution
It is recommended to use the Telemecanique TSXCUSB232 USB to RS-232 converter, as it uses drivers already supported and installed by the SFT2841 software.
Additional considerations:
- For SFT2841 versions up to V10.1:
- Only COM ports 1 to 4 should be used for Sepam 40 communication
- Although COM ports 1 to 9 may appear available, using ports above COM4 can result in user messages and logical equations not being properly loaded
- For SFT2841 version 10.3 and later (released Q4 2008):
- All COM ports supported by the operating system can be used without restriction
Using the recommended converter ensures reliable communication between the PC and Sepam relay via the front port.
