Geo SCADA Upgrade Issue: Wonderware Alarm Provider Service Stuck During Installation

When upgrading EcoStruxure Geo SCADA Expert, the installation process may fail because the Wonderware Alarm Provider service cannot stop. This service often gets stuck in a “Starting” state, preventing the installer from proceeding.

The installer displays the following error message:

Service 'Geo SCADA Expert Wonderware Alarm Provider' (WWAPSERVICE) could not be stopped.
Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services.

In Services, the Geo SCADA Expert Wonderware Alarm Provider status is stuck in Starting and does not respond to stop commands.

Workaround to Resolve the Issue:

Step 1: Disable the Service

  1. Open Services.
  2. Locate Geo SCADA Expert Wonderware Alarm Provider.
  3. Right-click the service → Properties.
  4. Set Startup type to Disabled.
  5. Click Apply and OK.

Step 2: Reboot the System

Restart the computer to clear the stuck state and prevent the service from starting automatically.

Step 3: Rerun the Installer

After reboot:

  • Launch the Geo SCADA installer again.
  • The installation should proceed without the previous error.
