How to make Import and Export data options available for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express

The option to import or export data from one database to another is typically executed with the use of the Data Import/Export Wizard. The wizard is accessible within SQL Server Management Studio, or Enterprise Manager for SQL 2000, on the database properties menu under Tasks.

However, the Import/Export Data options are not listed in SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express by default because a full standard edition of SQL Server, or better, is required for certain advanced tools, such as importing data from a separate database.

The work around is to install theMicrosoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit, which can be downloaded from the Microsoft Website:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E8AD606A-0960-4EFD-8BD7-B21370C7BE2B&displaylang=en

The installation takes approximately 20 minutes. Afterwards, navigate to theC:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS\Binn folder and double click on the DTSWizard.exe file to open the Import/Export Wizard.
