What is the Class 1, Division 2 use for 9001K and 9001SK operators ?
1. What you need to know
Harmony 9001K, 9001SK and 9001KX operators can be used in Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C and D locations, provided every one of the following conditions is met together: only hermetically sealed logic reed (9001KA4x) or power reed (9001KA5x) contact blocks are fitted; single-lamp push-to-test pilot lights are ordered with form code Y243; type KX illuminated operators use no four-lamp module and no two-lamp module other than the transformer type; the operators are mounted in a UL Type 4 or UL Type 13 enclosure; potentiometer operators are not used; and the assembly is not a pendant station. UL Type 7 or 9 explosion proof enclosure is not required in Division 2.
These conditions are cumulative – meeting four of six does not qualify the assembly.
2. Which codes define the answer?
Division 2 differs from Division 1 in one respect that drives everything below: the flammable atmosphere is confined to closed systems and would be present only through rupture, leakage or abnormal operation, not during normal service. The concern is therefore any component that could arc in normal operation, not the operator itself.
- NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) – Article 500 for hazardous location classification, Article 501 for Class I installations.
- NEMA 250 – enclosure type definitions, including types 4 (watertight), 13 (oiltight), and the explosion proof types 7 and 9.
- UL listing – file E10054(N), CCN NOIV covers the 9001 type K, SK and KX operators for this use.
3. Conditions for Class I, Division 2 use
| Item | Permitted | Not permitted | Sample commercial reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contact blocks | Hermetically sealed reed contact blocks only – logic reed (9001KA4x series) or power reed (9001KA5x series) | Any standard, non-sealed contact block – including the standard 9001KA1 | Logic: 9001KA41 (1 CO) Power: 9001KA51 (1 CO) |
| Illuminated K and SK operators | All type K and SK illuminated operators – UL approved for Class I, Division 2 | – | Complete unit: 9001KP1R31 |
| Push-to-test single-lamp pilot lights | Standard push-to-test unit ordered with form code Y243 (Substitution of standard 9001KA1 block with reed block 9001KA51) | Standard push-to-test unit supplied without form code Y243 | Complete unit 9001SKT1G31 |
| Type KX illuminated operators | Two-lamp modules of the transformer type | Four-lamp modules and any two-lamp modules other than the transformer type | Complete unit: 9001KXRC136 |
4. Schneider Electric references
| Function | Reference | Product description |
|---|---|---|
| Contact block – logic reed | 9001KA41 | Hermetically sealed logic reed, 1 C/O, for low-energy circuits. Also 9001KA42 (1 NO) and 9001KA43 (1 NC). |
| Contact block – power reed | 9001KA51 | Hermetically sealed power reed, 1 C/O. Also 9001KA52 (1 NO) and 9001KA53 (1 NC). This is the block fitted by form code Y243. |
| Complete unit illuminated operator | 9001KP1R31 | Standard non-sealed contact block. Listed so it is not specified by mistake: it disqualifies the assembly for Division 2. |
| Complete unit Push-to-test single-lamp pilot lights | 9001SKT1G31 | Single-lamp push-to-test pilot light. The form code must be added at order entry; without it the unit ships with a standard contact block. |
